Friday Finds: Holiday Glamour, a Bold, Beachy Real Wedding, and Traveling Smart

By November 9, 2012No Comments

It’s finally fall in Los Angeles, with overcast mornings, crisp nights, and moody, early evenings. I’m a big fan of the season, and I find November and December weddings terribly romantic. I’m coordinating two more this year, each one just before each of the two big holidays. Definitely gets me into a festive frame of mind.

Today’s Friday Finds gets into a holiday mood, but also provides a dose of hot summer sunshine as we flash back to a recent wedding that took place in a most stunning location. Here goes!

1. Mercury glass started trending during the holidays last year, and it’s still going strong. Mercury appeals to both antique-y and modern sensibilities, and unique designs can be found at outposts like Jamali Garden, One Kings Lane , and Pottery Barn.

For event design, it’s ideal to rent the vessels and votives from your florist, to save on costs; mercury vases are more expensive than clear glass or solid silver.

And, you can try DIY’g it – thanks to a great product by Krylon, Looking Glass spray paint. April Moffatt Design shares an awesome tutorial here. In any case, this could be a great option to save some money, but for large events it’s best to leave it to the pros and use ‘real’ mercury glass.

Also note, mercury vessels cannot hold water. Your florist will be holding the stems in bags full of water, or lining the vases with plastic liners.

2. Samantha Chu of Papermints is a phenomenal invitation designer, and has done custom designs for my clients. Lately she has experienced demand for another product: Custom Wall Art. These modern, chic pieces celebrate a time in a client’s life, offer a sentimental thought or two, or memorialize an artifact from an event (such as framed wedding invitations). She offers lots of ideas for the perfect gift for a couple or new parent. Check out her etsy store here.

3. Our favorite real wedding of this week was one of our very own: Sarah and Gary’s beautiful, bold beach wedding. Held on a private estate high above the sea, with a stunning view, it was truly memorable. They had a strong vision with cobalt blue and bright green, with accents of silver. It was a pleasure working with them and helping bring this vision to life! David Zentz Photography did a wonderful job capturing the day. David and his team have a really artistic eye; I look forward to working with him again soon. His work was posted on The Wedding Row – great work, David!

4. Let’s talk about travel now, shall we? Most likely you’ll be traveling for the holidays; and certainly for your wedding. I posted this week about best travel resources on the web, and I’d like to highlight one more: Rick Steves. The guy goes everywhere – and he knows just about everything. Not only are the articles on his website top notch, the travelers forums are also full of great advice from a well-traveled readership. His shows (found on PBS) are stunning travelogues shot in HD, as well. Check out his wisdom here.

5. And now, we leave you with some funny. Postcards from Yo Momma is genius. I guarantee you’ll bust out laughing from the first ‘postcard.’

TGIF Everyone!
